The Saugus Police Department implemented a three officer Drug Enforcement Unit on March 22, 199, as a result of a federal grant. The Unit was assigned to the Essex County District Attorney' s Drug Task Force in Lynn, for a training period of four weeks. The Essex County Task Force is comprised of Lynn Police and the State Police who work exclusively in plain clothes drug investigations. The Task Force also works closely with other local, state, and federal agencies. The training and experience gained at the Task Force proved essential in developing a successfull drug unit. In addition to the wealth of handson knowledge gained, the lasting relationships formed with other agencies during this time is the foundation of the investiga tions of the future. With drug investi gations, it is absolutely imperative to have a flow of communication and networking between agencies to en sure officer safety and effective use of time and resources. In the three years that the Saugus Police Depart ment Drug Enforcement Unit has been operational, the following statis tics have been recorded: 256 arrests have been made. This represents 13.5% of the total Departmental ar rests for the same time period; Over $150,000.00 in seized vehicles and assets have been made; Over $270,000.00 in cash has been seized; Over $300,000.00 in street value for heroin, cocaine, crackcocaine, vi codens, ecstasy, marijuana, anabolic steroids, psilocybin, klonopin, percocets, methamphetemine, and other controlled substance; and finally, 35 stolen handguns have been seized.

REPUTATION OF THE UNIT
Over the last three years, we have become an established and well respected Drug Unit. We have developed a reputation on the North Shore as a diligent, proactive unit, extremely dedicated to the eradication of drugs in our community. We now have the ability to call on almost unlimited resources from local, state, and federal agencies in our fight to keep the community safe from the ravages of the drug trade. These are resources we can no longer afford to be without. In addition, the Unit has garnered the admiration of regional and national drug organizations. In October 1999, the Unit was invited to attend the International Nar cotics Enforcement Officers Association's Annual Narcotics Investigation Conference in Albany, New York., as guests of the President of that organization. We were awarded full grants for the week oftrain ing. In June of 2000, the Unit was awarded the President's Special Achievement in the field of Narcotics Investigation from the Regional Narcotic Enforcement Officers Association. The Unit was honored at the Annual Awards Banquet in Hyannis, Massachusetts.
