Community Oriented Policing consists of eight segments. Community Policing includes Admini stration, Crime Prevention, Elderly programs, Youth Programs, D.A.R.E., Domestic Violence Programs, Partnerships, and Problem Solving Endeavors. We will describe some of the eight segments in this section. We will devote a complete section by itself to the eight element, Domestic Violence.

CRIME PREVENTION: The Saugus Police Department has 12 trained Officers involved in Crime Prevention. They attend a forty hour course conducted by the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council. Crime Prevention Officers are trained in a wide variety of community based initiatives including home security surveys, safeguarding homes and property, prevention of crime in the workplace, and the youth bicycle registration program.

Crime Prevention Officers also host Neighborhood Watch Meetings. These meetings consist of residents, businesses, and route officers combining to inform and take action on any matters of concern within their neighborhood.

SENIORS PROGRAMS: For seniors, we offer the "55 Alive" Driver Refresher Course which allows insurance discounts in certain locales. We offer a Telemarketing Fraud Awareness Program to alert seniors against scams.

The Police Department also conducts a Citizen Self Defense Course. Another very popular program is the File for Life which allows emer gency personnel access to medical and personal information. Seniors with Alz heimer's Disease may register with us in the "Alzheimer's Locate Program." People are registered and photographed. This supplies us with information to distribute to officers should an adult wander off.

P.A.L. & Youth Programs: Funding by Community Policing grants has allowed us to start the Police Activities League, or P.A.L. This program gives youths constructive activities for their free time while introducing them to Saugus Police Officers. We are currently in our sixth year of the Police Activity League. Police Officers act as coaches, instructors, referees, and fans. This is a great proactive way build solid relationships with our youth. To the right, you will see some of the programs we have made available to our youth. We have received very positive feed- back from participants, parents, and the public.

Programs include: Basketball Program, Baseball Clinic, Softball Clinic, Street Hockey, Flag Football, Teen Country Line Dancing, Volleyball

Building on the P.A.L. Programs, we have developed the Big Brother & Peer Cop Program. We target the concerns of the youth and work with them in seeking answers to many of their problems. This helps to break down barriers between the youth and police. By working with the youth of the Town of Saugus, we foster a trusting relationship. Police Officers now chaperone post prom parties, such as the Boston Harbor Senior From Cruise. We also stage a mock accident at the High School each year where students participate with police and public safety personnel to learn about the dangers of drunk driving and excessive speed. For younger aged children, we offer a Bicycle Registration Program, Baby Sitting Classes, and the Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program. We also conduct Child Safety Days where parents are invited to bring their children to be fingerprinted and photographed. Our Traffic Officer also provides a Child Safety Restraint Program where parents learn the correct way to use child safety equipment.
