Backbone of the Department
The Uniformed Division of the Police Department is our front line. They patrol the streets of Saugus twenty- four hours a day, three hundred sixty five days a year. They are first on the scene in any emergency, first to initiate most investigations, first to assist in any medical crisis, and first in other crime related areas. They also act as peacemakers in neighborhood disputes, and other problems hat do not necessarily arise to a level of criminal activity. Due to the current personnel crisis, we have had to suspend the D.A.R.E program, put Detectives back in uniform, and cut the traffic division to one person. In addition to lack of personnel from conventional reasoning, such as budget cuts, we have also fallen victim to the September 1lth attacks. Our Police Department currently has two officers who are military reservists. Officer James Scott was called to full active duty shortly after the attacks, and will be unable to perform his duties as a Saugus Patrol Officer.
