A SPECIAL THANK YOU
This month marks nineteen years of publication of Golden Spirit. Thanks go to the kind people who have contributed to its success: advertisers whose ads allows the newsletter to be free; writers; collators, mailers, typists.
The newsletter is valuable as a source of information of programs, services and activities at the Center. Without their assistance it would not be.
A thousand thank yous!

RETIRED MEN’S CLUB NEWS
The first fall meeting will be on Tuesday, September 14th at 9:30 A.M. The Men’s Club swings back into action and that’s also the day the Teddy Bears are having their picnic. We have been very fortunate the last couple of years to have outstanding, interesting speakers at our meetings. We are in the process of lining up our fall agenda and I must say it’s shaping up as very promising.
Meetings of the Retired Men’s Club are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. In September, meetings will be held on the 14th and 28th at the Center. All retired men and those that wish they were retired are invited to attend. Coffee and donuts are available and we are always pleased to welcome visitors. You do not have to be a member to monitor a meeting. Come on down, have a cup of coffee and check us out. Dues still remain at $3.00 per year or 2 years for $7.00 and life membership is available for $14.37. We are still working on our plans to attend the Bull Fights in Spain in April.

ARE YOU OK?
“Are You OK?” is the name of a new computerized telephone reassurance system that will be available to Saugus senior citizens this month. This program is being sponsored by the Saugus TRIAD council, collaboration between the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, District Attorney’s office and the Saugus Police Department.
The Are You OK? System is designed to call a senior’s home at a specified time each day. If no answer is received on three attempted calls the police dispatcher will call an emergency contact person to check on the senior. If no contact person is available a police officer will be sent to the senior’s home.
This is a purely volunteer program and comes at no cost to the participants. The program can be started or stopped at any time. Should someone wish to participate, they should simply call the Saugus Council on Aging and leave their name and telephone number. A Senior Center representative will come to their home to explain the program and fill out the appropriate information form. At that time the senior will be asked to choose a convenient time for the daily telephone contact.
This system is already installed in several Essex County communities and has been credited with at least two lives saved this past winter.
Are You OK? is different from other services in that it is provided to residents at NO COST and is a ‘passive’ system. That means that by doing nothing a senior will be able to summon help. This is especially important should a senior become unresponsive during the night and not be able to respond to make a phone call or activate a button.
It is our hope that families with elders living alone would be interested in signing up their senior family members and rest assured that someone is checking on their loved ones on a daily basis.
If you have any questions about this program, please contact the Senior Center at 781-231-4178 for further information.
