  What is the Conservation Commission?
The Saugus Conservation Commission is a 7-member volunteer board tasked with the protection of natural resources, especially wetlands. It is principally involved in administering the MA Wetlands Protection Act M.G.L. Ch. 131 sec. 40 originally passed in 1972, as well as the Town of Saugus Wetland By-law sec. 508. Under these regulations, the Commission regulates many types of activities in or near wetland areas. Under these laws, no one may "remove, fill, dredge, or alter" any wetland, floodplain, bank, land under a water body, or land within 100 feet of a wetland (referred to as the "buffer zone") without obtaining a permit from the Conservation Commission. Public meetings are generally held on the second and fourth Wed. monthly. (See the community event calendar for exact dates.)
